Melbourne City North Precinct Renewal

The CBD North masterplan aims to create a true CBD centre around RMIT University and the future State Library Station. The plan involves a new metro station below Swanston street, two upgraded tram stops and a new public square which connects with the Melbourne Central shopping centre. The overall ambition is to allow pedestrian movement and flow around the precinct and RMIT University whilst removing the physical barrier of public transport that currently exists.

The CBD North site is located within the Melbourne CBD, which is already well developed. With rapid population growth, many issues emerge within the site which include:

  • A lack of public green space
  • The existing Swanston Street spine is over populated especially during peak travel times
  • A lack of connection between RMIT University buildings 8 and 80 due to the tram stop separating pedestrian flow and
  • An interruption in bicycle flow due to the tram super stop.

The masterplan aims to improve cyclist flow and safety, through widening bike lanes along Swanston Street, sections of Franklin Street and Victoria Street. The proposal moves existing tram lines and stops underground to align with the proposed Metro Rail tunnel. Walkability and relaxation will be promoted for all precinct users through the above ground urban park that connects RMIT Buildings together.

A new innovation hub called ‘Site 41’ will house a mixture of programs and uses across education, retail, leisure, and public services such as co working spaces and sports facilities.
